The 10 Best RPG PC Games Ever
This is a list of the 10 best RPG PC games of all time. Many of these were also available for console, but for the most part they made their name on the PC. This is my own personal list and here are the rules I used to create this list:
- Each game must be available for the PC
- Each game must be considered an RPG
- Each game must not be an MMORPG
- Only one game per game series can make the list
10 – Might & Magic 6: The Mandate of Heaven – Released in 1998, MM6 is considered one of the best of the Might and Magic series. It is credited with igniting the rebirth of CRPGs at the time of its release. It was also praised for its non-linear, user-friendly premise and an interactive, detailed game world.
9 – Planescape: Torment – The game was released in December 1999. It was considered by many video game journalists to be the best role-playing game of 1999. Planescape: Torment won multiple awards for RPG of the Year and Game of the Year.
8 – Baldur’s Gate – Another game that is credited with helping the CRPG revival during its release. The game was a financial success and sold over 2 million copies. It received positive reviews from virtually every major gaming publication at the time of its release.
7 – Neverwinter Nights – Winner of E3 Best RPG and Best Online Multiplayer in 2000, NWN also went on to win the Best Roleplaying Game at E3 in 2001 and 2002. It was based off a premise similar to MMORPGs, but allowed users to host the server.
6 – Diablo – Released in 1996, Diablo has sold more than 2.5 million copies. It is considered to be the inventor of the point-and-click action RPG genre. The game was awarded Game of the Year by GameSpot during its release.
5 – Fable – A huge commercial success, Fable sold over 375,000 copies in North America during its first week. By the end of 2006 it sold more than two million copies. The game was well-received by critics and scored very high with game reviewers.
4 – Final Fantasy VII – Considered by many as the best game of the Final Fantasy series, FFVII received near universal acclaim upon release. The game was considered ‘light years’ ahead of other games during the time of its release. It has received awards for “best story”, “best RPG”, “best overall game”, and many other categories.
3 – Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind – Winner of multiple Game of the Year awards in 2002, Morrowind was well-received and earned high scores from reviewers. It was applauded for its large and richly detailed game environment, which included real-time weather effects and a day/night cycle.
2 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic – Developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts, Knights of the Old Republic was considered by many to be the 2003 Game of the Year. It is also considered to be one of the most influential works of the Star Wars Expanded Universe.
1 – Fallout 3 – The most recent entry into the best RPG PC games list, Fallout 3 is winner of dozens of awards including Game of the Year in 2008. Overall it has received some of the highest ratings of any RPG ever created. The game sold over 610,000 units in its first month of release.
